Marte Meo veiledning brukes forebyggende i helsestasjonssammenheng og som tiltak/behandling innenfor barnevern, fosterhjem, barne-og ungdomspsykiatrien og habiliteringen (barn med spesielle behov). De senere årene har metoden blitt videreutviklet og brukes nå også bl.a. innenfor familieterapifeltet, i barnehager og i eldreomsorgen.

Metoden uppkom som en reaktion mot dåtidens Marte Meo riktar sig till föräldrar och barn, familjehem och adoptivfamiljer. Marte Meo-terapeuterna arbetar inte med familjer där det finns ett aktivt missbruk eller om det finns psykisk ohälsa som förhindrar Marte Meo-arbetet (ex psykosproblematik), ej heller med svagt intellektuella föräldrar.
