The crumhorn is the earliest and most common instrument of the reed cap family which also includes the kortholt, cornamuse, and hirtenschalmei. Crumhorn, also spelled Krummhorn, (from Middle English crump: “crooked”), double-reed wind instrument that flourished between the 15th century and about 1650. It consists of a small boxwood pipe of cylindrical bore, curved upward at the lower end and pierced with finger holes like those of a recorder. The crumhorn of the Renaissance period of western music history was not a solo instrument but an ensemble one. These wind-cap double-reed aerophones with a homogeneous timbre were meant to be played together as an ensemble (consort) to perform polyphonic music.

No other modern double reed instrument has such a bore. The Crumhorn Collective was founded in 2009 as a completely student-run renaissance band based at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
